Instructional Practices

There are many ways teachers can teach fluency in their classroom. Below is a partial list of ideas:

  • Partner Reading: Students pair with a partner at a similar reading level. One student reads a passage for 1 minute while the other marks errors. Then the roles are reversed. Students read the same passage twice each day for one week before moving to a new passage. Reading rates are charted to show progress.
  • Pointed Reading: (1st reading) Teacher reads a short passage or poem to students while they read along silently. (2nd reading) Teacher reads the passage again while students underline at least 5 things (important words, lines or phrases, things they have questions about, etc.) (3rd reading). Teacher reads the passage aloud-students read aloud the parts they underlined.
  • Repeated Readings: Provide many opportunities to reread texts or portions of text for different purposes.

  • Buddy Reading: Buddy Reading is a fun way to help people learn to read, whether they are adults or children. In Buddy Reading, a person [or a parent] who knows how to read well reads with a person [or a child] who can't read as well. Together they choose a book that isn't too hard and find a good spot to read.

Buddy Reading helps the person who can't read as well hear the sounds of words when someone else reads with them. When they learn the sounds of the words better, they are able to figure out the pronunciation of the words. The better reader helps the other reader as they read the book together. The readers can take turns reading, or read the words together. The better reader can help with pronunciation, the meaning of words, and understanding the story. They can ask questions as they read. The buddy can give clues when the student reader gets stuck on a word.
  • Reader's Theater: Provides opportunities for students to reread text multiple times, read with expression, and read for meaning.
