
There is not at this time a recommended district-wide assessment tool for vocabulary knowledge. Teachers are encouraged to use formative assessment on a regular basis to determine students vocabulary needs and incorporate authentic vocabulary instruction accordingly. Worksheets with lists of new vocabulary words asking for definitions, appropriate usage in sentences, etc., has not proven to be beneficial in improving student word knowledge and is discouraged in practice. By utilizing the resources in this site, teachers will discover more effective ways to teach and assess vocabulary in their classrooms.
